Gloucester A 3 - 1 Woking

Gloucester’s A Squad returned to winning ways with a Southern Counties Cup victory over Woking at a windswept Longlevens.

Playing into the elements in front of their lowest home crowd of the season, Gloucester opened in positive fashion with Townsend, Roddis, Gore and Pledger linking up well in midfield and it was Roddis who first threatened the Woking goal with a fine run through the centre.

The hosts claimed the lead on ten minutes when Pledger’s forward run was illegally checked just outside the box. Gore’s resulting free kick was blocked by the wall, but the same player followed up to net left-footed with a low drive into the bottom far corner.

Woking enjoyed their best spell of the game following this setback and Weir-Roberts and Hylton, alongside the impressive Richards were kept busy as the visitors looked to make an impression down the flanks. Twice though Gloucester conceded cheap free kicks in dangerous positions but the host’s goal remained intact as first La Roche and then Jones fired their efforts wide of the target.

Gloucester doubled their advantage on 24 minutes when Jenner seized on to Pledger’s forward pass, the pacey striker racing clear and following up well after Rush had blocked his initial effort.

Just before the interval the city team added a third, a fine pass from Gore setting up Roddis who swept the ball home from twelve yards.

With the breeze in their favour after the break Gloucester enjoyed the early possession as Gore saw his effort saved by Rush before Roddis drove just over.

Woking however were given a lifeline as La Roche was adjudged to have been fouled in the box and Brown confidently netted the resulting penalty, giving Troke no chance at all.

The visitors were now having the better of the midfield battle, but with Richards’ intelligent reading of the game, Troke was only really tested on one occasion, the keeper making a routine save from Jones’ effort.

At the other end Jenner saw his drive saved by Rush after Weir-Roberts had initiated the opportunity and Townsend and Gore each went close. The final opportunity fell to Jenner who was again denied by the Woking keeper, but a fourth Gloucester goal would have been tough on a hard-working Woking team that proved to be the better side during the second half.

Gloucester A: Troke; Weir-Roberts, Richards, Hylton; Gore, Townsend, Roddis, Pledger; Jenner. Sub: Coldridge.
